[edit] Initial Comments

Thanks for adding the Windows Update Section, Ike.--Negster22 22:24, 24 November 2005 (EST)

I added this page to help MekongDelta69 to get started. He posted a great article in the General Computer Problems forum and he has offered to place it here as well. --Ikester 00:34, 25 November 2005 (EST)
Then should I put my Win Updates troubleshooting in MRP, in MekongDelta69's section or somewhere else? Maybe I'll make my own page which can be linked to from both points for troubleshooting.--Negster22 01:47, 25 November 2005 (EST)
Have you seen his forum post? Follow my link above and it's the OP. Have a look and decide how your stuff fits or doesn't fit with his instructions and we can go from there. If it's not close, we can make a companion page. If it's similar, perhaps you may want to tweak his stuff. --Ikester 09:39, 25 November 2005 (EST)

I removed BITS from the title as it is misleading. BITS stands for Background Intelligent Transfer Service and which is required to accomplish data transfer in Windows Updates, but that is not the only requirement. As you will soon see after I add more to this section,--Negster22 22:24, 24 November 2005 (EST)

OK thanks. I returned the favour by moving these discussion points from the article to the talk page.  ;) --Ikester 00:34, 25 November 2005 (EST)
I didn't realize I posted those points in the article. OOPS!!--Negster22 01:44, 25 November 2005 (EST)

[edit] Placing the forum post here

Placed the How To Fix Windows Update (BITS) [Newly Edited] post to this page. Thanks to CCSP member MekongDelta69 for the labour in gathering this set of instructions and for allowing it's submission here.

Please note: Changing tags and reformatting lines (esp. to add line feeds where appropriate) takes a lot of work. I hope revisions can be made to this page directly, rather than editing the forum post and having to again transition it to here.

Also note: I made certain editorial changes to remove personal references from the document. I also took advantage of available wiki tags to help clarify certain instructions. Please cast a critical eye to ensure that no content was revised in error or which might have lost the original intent.

BTW, the <font size=??></font> tag doesn't seem to work properly.

Made changes as recommended at How_To_Fix_Windows_Update_BITS_Newly_Edited.html#667160 with caveates noted at How_To_Fix_Windows_Update_BITS_Newly_Edited.html#668167 --Ikester 16:51, 28 November 2005 (EST)

[edit] BITSService.reg

I have a very minor suggestion. I recommend that you use ASCII REGEDIT4 format for BITSService.reg, since ASCII is easier to inspect than Unicode. Here's BITSService.reg converted to REGEDIT4 format: http://www.geeksalive.com/BITSService.reg (and note the comments that I added).

Also another nit: the name of the .zip file containing BITSService.reg is "bitsservice_486.zip" (not "BITSService.zip"). Geeksalive 10:35, 23 June 2006 (EDT)

[edit] why does this article exist?

The original forum thread explains why the thread exists, but the wiki article does not.

About two months ago, my Windows Update feature stopped working.
I could not download Critical Updates (much less the optional ones).
I researched it for about two weeks, learned everything I could,
tried everything and nothing worked.

Finally I chose the option to speak with a M.S. Tech. Rep.,
because apparently since a lot of people were having the
same or similar problems, they put in an option where you
could speak to one directly (for free) for this (and closely) related
problems only.

What ensued was a very friendly, ongoing, two week, detailed,
trial and error e-mail correspondence (which I won't print here, obviously).
What you see below is the final result, after everything finally worked.

Hope it's helpful to someone: [1]

Coming to this page without reading the forum article, it presents no overview or summary. Is this intentional? --Brewt 13:11, 23 December 2007 (EST)

IIRC, I was attempting to keep this third person so anyone would feel free to contribute further. Besides, IMO the talk page is the proper venue for revealing why the original contributor composed the article (if it matters). --Ikester 23:53, 24 December 2007 (EST)
More specifically, whom is this article for? What is it about Windows Update that is broken? Is it broken for all users? If not, how does it get broken in the first place? These are the kinds of questions I had hoped to find answers to in the article summary (which does not exist), and found some answers to in the original forum thread.
IF the purpose of the article is to serve as a handy reference to link to from the forum when people ask, then that doesn't matter. If it is for people searching the internet to find and use, then a bit of summary might be useful. --Brewt 01:09, 25 December 2007 (EST)
Good point. Seems like a good thing to add. Can the answers be garnered from the forum topic perhaps? --Ikester 03:01, 26 December 2007 (EST)
The initial post doesn't answer all these questions. The thread is long, and there are multiple threads on the topic. More thread reading is required to answer these questions, unless someone who is more knowledgeable can chime in. --Brewt 11:24, 26 December 2007 (EST)
