[edit] Dangers of the Online World

Image:Child1.gif
The Internet can be a very unsafe place to be for adults and children particularly. Every day children are stalked online via instant chat, email and other forms of internet communication. Online predators enter a teen-oriented chatroom and within an extremely short amount of time will have picked a target. Often the contact is made by an adult sometimes pretending to be someone younger as well who tries to lure a minor to meet offline in person.

We hope through the information provided in these pages:

  • To increase your knowledge on this serious topic
  • Give you the information needed to help protect your children and prevent them being victimized
  • Know what the warning signs are of a child who has been targeted
  • What to do in a worst case scenario

    [edit] Child Pornography

The other area of crimes against children is the existence of child pornography websites.

Child pornography may be defined as: "visual depictions of sexual activities involving actual children under a specified age." Reference: answers.com Other commonly used phrases for this illegal practice is: child exploitation which a more legalistic term and kiddie porn which is a more vernacular term.

Child pornography on the Internet is easily obtainable by interested parties. Usually people who engage in viewing child pornography online obtain photos or videos from websites. There are other methods of obtaining child pornography online, mostly through various forms of online file sharing.

The laws in each country vary tremendously as to how child pornography is addressed. For more information on each country, please read about child pornography on the wiki website. In the United States it is illegal to have images of child pornography stored on one's harddrive. A fair warning: it is very important to note that if you as a casual surfer in the US stumble upon what you think is child pornography, it is best to report it immediately and refrain from visiting the website as it is illegal.

[edit] Tools Children use to communicate online

Children younger than 10 years of age can be very active online. Many teens, for instance, use IM (Instant Messenger or instant chat client) programs. Child predators can easily contact a child through these type of live chat programs.

Children can be contacted through email as well. It is highly recommended that a parent monitor the content email accounts of their children to minimize the potential of a potential child predator getting close to that child through email.
